This is the \u00abpeak-end rule\u00bb\u2014we judge experiences by narrative structure, not by averaging all moments equally.<\/p>\n    <p>Your sense of wellbeing depends more on whether your life makes a good story than on the objective quality of individual moments. This is why people who overcome hardship often report greater life satisfaction than those who&#8217;ve had easy lives\u2014their story has more compelling structure.<\/p>\n    \n    <div class=\"tarot-science\">\n        <strong>The Research<\/strong>\n        <p>Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman&#8217;s research demonstrates that humans have two selves: one that experiences life and one that remembers it. Remarkably, the remembering self\u2014the storyteller\u2014determines our life satisfaction, not the experiencing self. Given partial information, it automatically fills in gaps to create coherent wholes. This works for visual perception (you \u00absee\u00bb objects that are partially hidden), but it also works for narrative.<\/p>\n    <p>Given a few events, the brain automatically constructs a story linking them. <em>She looked at me strangely \u2192 She must not like me \u2192 Because I said something wrong yesterday \u2192 I&#8217;m bad at social situations.<\/em> In milliseconds, isolated events become a meaningful narrative\u2014whether or not that narrative is accurate.<\/p>\n    <p>We don&#8217;t experience this as \u00abmaking up a story.\u00bb We experience it as perceiving reality. The narrative feels discovered, not created. This is both the power and the danger of the storytelling mind.<\/p>\n    \n    <div class=\"tarot-insight\">\n        <strong>Key Understanding<\/strong>\n        <p>The stories we tell ourselves feel like observations about reality. They&#8217;re actually constructions\u2014interpretations, not facts. Recognizing this creates freedom to question and revise narratives that don&#8217;t serve us.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"tarot-card\">\n    <h3>Memory as Reconstruction<\/h3>\n    <p>We imagine memory as a recording\u2014events stored and played back accurately. Research shows it&#8217;s more like improvisation. Each time we remember, we reconstruct the memory, influenced by current beliefs, feelings, and the narrative we&#8217;re building.<\/p>\n    <p>This means your life story isn&#8217;t a fixed record. It&#8217;s an ongoing creation, revised with each telling. The past literally changes based on how you frame it now. Two people with identical experiences can have completely different life stories depending on how they&#8217;ve narrated those experiences over time.<\/p>\n    <p>This is why therapy works.
